Digestive Issues

What is

Digestive Issues

Digestive issues encompass a range of symptoms and conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract, including bloating, gas, diarrhoea, constipation, and indigestion. You don’t have to have a diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome to have gut issues or simply a sensitive gut. These issues can arise from various factors and may have been with you since childhood. But the good news is, there are many options for how we can improve your gut health and reduce any symptoms you experience that get in the way of healthy digestion. The gut is so foundational for your overall health, that investing in improving its function can have a massive impact on your overall well being.

Symptoms

  • Bloating or abdominal discomfort
  • Gas or flatulence
  • Constipation, looser stool or diarrhoea
  • Heartburn or acid reflux
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fatigue or low energy after eating
  • Abdominal cramping or pain
  • Feeling of fullness or heaviness in the abdomen
  • Changes in bowel habits (e.g., alternating between diarrhoea and constipation)
  • Excessive belching or passing of gas
  • Foul-smelling stools
  • Blood in stool or rectal bleeding
  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  • Persistent heartburn or chest pain
  • Unexplained weight loss or lack of appetite
  • Feeling of incomplete evacuation after bowel movements

Treatment options

We take a deep dive into your overall health and evaluate what could be contributing to your digestive symptoms. We assess things like medical history, dietary habits, stress levels, and potential triggers such as food sensitivities or imbalances in gut microbiota.

We may look into testing if need be, although an experienced naturopath can usually assess what might be happening from your symptoms profile.

As you might expect, diet plays a huge role in treating the gut, but what is ‘good’ for the gut is remarkably different depending on the individual. Our comprehensive assessment at the beginning of treatment will help us to develop a nutritional plan that works for you.

We will also look at gut healing supplementation that can improve the intensive lining and reduce any permeability, improve liver and spleen function to increase digestive function in the stomach, reduce any inflammation in the GI tract, and replenish microbiome balance.

Herbal medicine can really help to alleviate digestive problems and also work to improve how your digestive system functions, whether it is reducing inflammation, increasing bowel regularity, slowing bowel movements down if you suffer from urgency or diarrhoea.

The goal with any plan is to help solve the underlying problem so that you don’t need to rely on any interventions or widely restrictive diets to have a healthy and functioning digestive system. By addressing digestive issues through naturopathic interventions, individuals can improve digestion, reduce symptoms, and optimise nutrient absorption for overall health and vitality.
